Artist's Comments

This is my easy 8 step guide to creating character art in Photoshop.

I've learned a lot from various artists here on DA, and I hope this gives back to the community.

BTW, anyone know how to add a separate preview image?

Feel free to 'fave' if this helps ya.

Cool tutorial. Aside from the drawing directly in Photoshop (something I don't think I could ever do), it's very similar to what I do.

yeah, I think a lot of people have a similar process.

I wrote this to help some of those starting out.

I sadly do not have Photoshop, but I have a digital drawing program. I plan on trying to use some of your techniques in a later pic.

I wish that I drinked. I know it won't solve my problems, but at least I'll have something to blame my problems on.

cool, show me when you've got some done.

Great tutorial. I freehand the shadows with black at 30% opacity on a layer group above the flats. I like seeing different methods.

I used to do black as well, but I found that a little color goes a long way.

I just recently concluded I couldn't use it on yellow areas because it turns green.

My digital coloring and implementing process is way different :S

Channels are my BFF, layers I use in moderation and my process of rendering is complicated. But we work in different areas, so there :P

P.S. If you want to actually use scanned in pencils/inks but the scan is shit or whatever, simply have the scanned image up (or the section that is problematic selected) and hit Control+L. Move the sliders to fuck with the levels and it'll clean up pencil lines into a faux-ink or simply clean up general schmutz that may be around all the while keeping the whites...well, white.

I used to do everything digitally until I found out the wonderful world of "collectors." People who REALLY collect character art and what not, want hard copies, the 'originals.' So I stopped doing everything just on the computer. I now keep pencils and inks as hardcopies and sell them in conjunction with my digital coloring...you make more money that way ;)
