Bellonda and Otis by Juggertha Bellonda and Otis by Juggertha
This is a friend of Naughty Nadya's (how can you tell ;) ) [link]
She has a robot that she is VERY close to and I thought I'd try to incororate that into the shot.

Any thoughts?

It's looking pretty much done now. I might touch up a few glows tomorrow, but basically the jist of it is done. I'm really liking how it turned out. I would have liked to see more funk with the metal, but for a first run at a major robot, I think I did ok.

Edit: Just thought I'd put this up here as a reminder to myself - never proceed with anything unless you get approval and payment on the sketch.

It was a long time ago... and I know what I did wrong on it. I just didn't want it sitting in my gallery without this tag - never was paid for it, so no needto have it available.

yeah, but each time I looked at it, I was reminded of not being paid. So I figured I'd put this mark on it.

Huh, never saw the nipple before, interesting. Not what I intended to have on her portrait but that can be fixed if not too late. As I said in the first place, take your time on it and it should look awesome :) It does now after a year has passed but things can always be improved upon. Keep up the good work.

You're definitely getting stronger with your line-less digital painting. It's not a style I personally prefer, but it does look good.

The shading job in this is certainly very impressive, especially on the mecha and the character. The mechas in the background are blurred, which is good for a sense of focus. The color composition itself is good. However, this picture seems to beg for line-art, unless it is absolutely not needed.

I know line art would be the easy way to go, but I'm hoping to get my painting skills to a point where it is not needed.

Good comments though. Thanks.

Looks great Juggy! One final bit of feedback? Her eyes are purple and the black streak on her face is actually body paint or make up rather then a mask. She will look more...human and have a closer connection to the audience. Otherwise, it looks simply incredible and I really like it.

I'd have to echo Notmeeee's sentiment about the nipple, but I definitely think this is some of your best work to date!! :D

Great shading sets up the mood, generally I'm not a prude, but I think the boob detracts, not adds to the piture....what am i saying?.....

Some constructive critizism, if you dont mind, for my ideal image:
Good sketch, Otis looks great, maybe make his upper torso thicker (think a small cramped compartment inside that a human would barely fit in)and he should be a bit larger in comparison to Bellonda, if that will make it easier to draw it that way. On Bellonda, torso and head are perfect but her appendages should appear less muscular. She is fragile and needs Otis for protection from superheros who can easily kick her into the gutter; she doesnt try to work out her body or learn to fight with her robots protecting her, she just stands there thinking diabolically, hand on chin, while her bots fill the room with autofire. The poses of the two subjects in the composition are interesting and while I never saw it that way, I think it would work if Bellonda's head is looking down to her left in 3/4 perspective, with an expression that she has more pleasant things on her mind, imho. Maybe you can draw Otis in one sketch and on a seperate sketch, draw Bellonda on translucent sketch paper and play around with the scale and composition of the two subjects for different ideas and looks until you find the best composition. I hope this feedback helps. Keep up the good work Juggertha! And thanks again for doing this!

Hey Bell. Glad you got a DA account. Now you can see the process as it unfolds.

At this point, I have tow options:
-continue with this pose and "tweak it" to meet some of your thoughts
-do up something different.

As the first seems the easiest, I'm trying that (which does not rule out #2). I've been skimming inches off of Bell and making her slimmer and less muscular. Her overall size I'm not going to mess with though. I have envisioned this piece with her caressing Otis' face, and I'd like to keep that in. As well, I think the head on look is something that is looking well.

To counter the "size problem" I've decided that Otis can be bigger. Maybe not exactly taller, but his plates and racks can be a lot bigger than in the first draft. I'm hoping that will help with any size imbalance you may perceive.

Over all though, I really like this pose and the hints it lets loose. Kind of a protection/love thing.

I'll try to brain storm up other poses to see if anything else pops up ;)

-Juggy

I've still got to hammer out some perspective issues with the "other" hand actually.

BTW, that's a gun.

Ya... a LUV gun =p

I'm just joking with ya... I knew it was a gun (a luv gun) but as far as the perspective issues... I can't see any, but then, it's still a rough sketch. One thing that helps me out with perspective issues is to draw lines across the surface of what ever it is that I'm trying to figure the perspective out on like it was getting all sliced up deli style. This is otherwise known as "cross contour drawing" and it really does help.
